Comparing #socialcare hourly pay across the sectors

Following on from my post comparing in-house and external costs in social care (and do please read the caveats in that post), here are some more interesting comparisons, this time on the pay per hour for social care workers. (Data from the Adult Social Care Workforce Strategy)

Pay per hour: Social Care Workers:

  • Local government: £7.19
  • Voluntary Sector: £7.00
  • Private Sector: £6.54

Of course, we should always remember 6.4m people also provide unpaid care worth approximately £119bn per year – the equivalent of a salary of approx. £18.5k per unpaid carer per year (from Carers UK)

  1. Hi Rich,

    If you look in the supporting tables for the following NHS IC data:
    NHS Information Centre for Health and Social Care (2012) Personal Social Services: Expenditure and Unit Costs, England 2011-12 provisional release. Annex: Provisional council level unit costs (table). (NHS IC, London)

    It provides data for each LA on in-house and private sector home care and res care. I worked out the median, mean and SD for each…

    “Average gross weekly expenditure per person on supporting older people in own provision residential care (including full cost paying anda preserved rights residents)”
    median = 988
    mean = 1,117
    SD = 576

    “Average gross weekly expenditure per person on supporting older people in residential care provided by others”
    median = 472
    mean = 496
    SD = 97.9

    “Average gross weekly expenditure per person on supporting adults aged 18-64 with a Learning disability in own provision residential care (including full cost paying and preserved rights residents)”
    median = 1,716
    mean = 2,100
    SD = 1,516

    “Average gross weekly expenditure per person on supporting adults aged 18-64 with a Learning disability in residential care provided by others (including full cost and preserved rights clients)”
    median = 1,289
    mean = 1,297
    SD = 308

    “Average gross hourly cost for home help/care provided by LA”
    median = 41
    mean = 48
    SD = 29

    “Average gross hourly cost for home help/care provided by others”
    median = 15
    mean = 16
    SD = 3.4

    Blimey! Although, humungous SD’s for LA provision – may suggest not comparing like with like, some residual services perhaps can’t be outsourced due to supply problems?
